In industrial thermal applications, the operation of hot-water and gas-fired boilers is quite complex, involving both the boiler system and the piping network. Precautions for Operating Hot-Water Gas Boilers

 

(1) When starting the large circulating water pump, first open the bypass valve to prevent the boiler or radiators from being damaged due to excessively rapid pressure buildup during startup. After the boiler is operating normally, open the main water valve and close the bypass valve.

 

(2) As the water temperature rises and feedwater enters the boiler, gases will continuously accumulate; therefore, the vent valve should be opened frequently.

 

(3) During operation, hot-water and gas-fired boilers should also be periodically drained through the blowdown valve. When performing blowdown, ensure stable boiler pressure to prevent water hammer caused by steam‑induced boiling of the boiler water. Wastewater from the network system is discharged via a wastewater treatment unit.

 

(4) Minimize the make-up water volume in hot-water heating systems; promptly repair leaks; strengthen management of air‑vent and drain devices; and prohibit the unauthorized use of hot water for other purposes. Under normal operating conditions, the system’s make-up water should be kept to no more than 1% of the circulating water volume.

 



 

(5) The expansion pipe of the expansion tank shall be installed on the boiler’s water supply (outlet) main pipe; valves are strictly prohibited on the expansion pipe, and antifreeze measures must be implemented.

 

(6) The circulating water shall maintain a certain flow rate and be evenly distributed to all heating surfaces to prevent evaporation.

 

(7) Appropriate measures to protect against power outages should be implemented. When a naturally circulated hot-water gas boiler experiences a sudden power failure, it can still maintain circulation of the boiler water, posing little threat to safe operation. However, in a forced-circulation hot-water gas boiler, a sudden power outage that forces the pump and fan to stop will immediately halt water circulation, increasing the risk of serious accidents due to evaporation. Some larger boiler rooms are equipped with backup power supplies or diesel generators that should be promptly started upon grid failure to ensure uninterrupted water circulation within the system.

 

(8) To ensure coordinated operation between the boiler combustion system and the water circulation system, and to prevent accidents from occurring or escalating, it is advisable to interlock the boiler’s coal‑feeding and ventilation equipment with the water pump, so that the furnace is immediately shut down once the water circulation is halted.

 

(9) Nowadays, environmental protection is being promoted nationwide, particularly with regard to gas-fired boilers. When purchasing a boiler, users should pay attention to local environmental regulations and select an appropriately compliant model.
